Commitment is the outcome of intense desire. When desire becomes full, you declare with resolve "I want it! I am determined to have it!" When you want something so much that you are willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen, you have reached the point of commitment.
The ultimate commitment is the one you make with yourself: to take responsibility for your life and to make the most of it. This lifelong commitment is born from a sense of urgency, recognition that time waits for no one and that the choices we make and the actions we take today determine our tomorrows.
John F. Kennedy said: "There are costs and risks to a program of action, but they are far less than the long range risks and costs of comfortable inaction."
THE COSTS OF NOT MAKING A COMMITMENT – GIVING UP ON YOU.
While the costs of making a commitment are usually only too obvious, the cost of not making a commitment, though less immediate and apparent, are often far greater. Failure to make a commitment that’s right for you will cost you the loss of belief in yourself. To stop believing in yourself is so damaging to your happiness and well being that nothing could possibly be worth it. If you do, your lifestyle becomes a trap; your outlook becomes bleak, critical and hopeless. You will feel drained of vital energy, adrift without purpose or direction.
The Four Barriers to Commitment:
Distractions – divert your attention away from your goal.
Fear – paralyses you and stops you in your tracks.
Resistance - is any individual or group (border bullies) that block your advancement toward your goal.
Being overwhelmed – is not doing what you know you should do because you don’t have a clear enough idea of how to proceed.
The Four D’s of Commitment
Discipline – it will take discipline to let go of the distracting negatives habits and thoughts that slow you down.
Daring – it will take daring to move forward in the face of fear.
Diplomacy – it will take diplomacy to overcome resistance and gain the support you need.
Detachment - it will take detachment because it is the key to continued learning and growth.
As you master the obstacles to commitment and build confidence, you will come to know, that you can be, do or have anything.
A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE QUOTES
If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you will get what you’ve always got.
“I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority.”
- E.B. White (1899-1985)
“Everything one writes now is overshadowed by this ghastly feeling that we are rushing towards a precipice and though we shan’t actually prevent ourselves or anyone else from going over, must put up some sort of a fight!”
- George Orwell
